The fast summary

United's baggage policy is one of the most-searched in the U.S. — and one of the easiest to misread. Most travelers get tripped up by three things: the Basic Economy carry-on restriction, the difference between domestic and long-haul international allowances, and the way overweight and oversize fees stack on top of the bag fee. This guide walks through each one with current numbers.

Carry-on and personal item rules

United allows most travelers two free items in the cabin:

  • Personal item: Maximum 9 × 10 × 17 inches. Must fit under the seat in front of you.
  • Carry-on bag: Maximum 9 × 14 × 22 inches, including wheels and handles.
Basic Economy exception: On most U.S. domestic Basic Economy tickets, you are only allowed the personal item. If you bring a full carry-on to the gate, you pay the standard checked bag fee plus a $25 gate handling charge. The restriction does not apply on trans-Atlantic, trans-Pacific, or South American routes, or to MileagePlus Premier members, Star Alliance Gold, and eligible United credit card holders.

Checked baggage fees

Domestic and short-haul international

  • First checked bag: $35 pre-paid online, $40 at the airport
  • Second checked bag: $45 pre-paid online, $50 at the airport
  • Third bag and beyond: $150 each, accepted only if space allows

Long-haul international

On most long-haul international Economy fares, the first checked bag is free. A second bag usually costs about $100. Basic Economy on long-haul routes typically charges $75–$80 for the first bag.

Overweight and oversize surcharges

  • 51–70 lb: +$100 to $200
  • 71–100 lb: +$200 or more
  • Oversize (63–115 linear in): +$200
  • Over 100 lb: Refused. Must be shipped as cargo.
A 60-lb bag flying coast-to-coast on United Economy costs $35 plus $100 overweight = $135 each way. That's where shipping starts to make obvious sense.

Four legitimate ways to skip the bag fee

1. Get a United co-branded credit card

  • Premier Gold: 2 free bags, up to 70 lb each
  • Premier Platinum & 1K: 3 free bags, up to 70 lb each

3. Fly a premium cabin

United First, United Business, and Polaris Business all include two free checked bags up to 70 lb each.

4. Pre-pay online
