Avianca's fare system — what everyone gets wrong
Avianca uses t-shirt sizes for fares: XS, S, M, L, and XXL. Each "size" includes a different baggage allowance, and the cheapest fare (XS) includes virtually no luggage at all. If you don't understand the system before booking, you'll either overpay for bags at the airport or arrive with a bag you can't bring on board.
Carry-on rules
Personal item (every fare)
One personal item is included on every ticket type. Maximum dimensions: 18 × 14 × 10 inches (45 × 35 × 25 cm).
Carry-on bag (fare-dependent)
Only included on S, M, L, XXL, and Business fares. If you bought XS, you have no carry-on allowance.

Four tips that save money
- Do the math on fares first. S or M is often cheaper than XS + paid bag.
- Join LifeMiles. Even Silver tier gets extra baggage benefits.
- Measure your personal item. XS gate agents are strict.
- Weigh at home. A $10 scale stops most overweight surprises.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pool baggage weight with my travel companion?
No. Avianca operates per-bag in the Americas. A 26-kg bag is overweight even if your partner's only weighs 10 kg.
I bought XS and changed my mind. Can I add a bag?
Yes — through "My Trips" on the Avianca website. Do it early for best price.
Are CPAP machines allowed?
Yes. Medical assistive devices don't count toward your carry-on limit.
